Description
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring substance produced by plants in response to stress such as injury, ultraviolet exposure, and fungal attack. Resveratrol is produced by more than 70 species of plants in response to such stressful situations, as a mechanism of resistance to parasites (to inhibit the development of an infection in the plant) and other adverse conditions (1).
Currently, Resveratrol is in most cases extracted from Japanese knotweed Polygonum. Yet the process is dependent on the variable harvest, and typically has low extraction yield and results in a low-purity product. Production of Resveratrol by fermentation represents an alternative process circumventing these disadvantages.
Resveratrol is found in nature as cis-resveratrol and trans-resveratrol. Of the 2 isomers, research has been focused on the trans-resveratrol isomer because it is thought to be more stable and more biologically active (2).
Wines, particularly red wines, are a source of some levels of resveratrol and has been suggested by some to be partially responsible for the French paradox (3). While the connection between the two is not yet clear from a scientific point of view, Resveratrol has been present in traditional medicinal preparations, such as darakchasava or manakka, for more than 2000 years (4).
Due to its outstanding properties and potential to affect the health in humans, Reveratrol has been intensively investigated by the academic research groups during the past decades.
Nevertheless, in contrast to its potential, the application of Reveratrol in humans presents important challenges. More specifically, while oral administration of Resveratrol in humans indicated that a good amount of resveratrol is absorbed, possibly by transepithelial diffusion, the oral bioavailability is low (<1%) due to rapid and extensive metabolism in the intestine and liver (3).
MCS Formulas provides an outstanding formula to support Resveratrol absorption …
Our Resveratrol capsules include the more biologically active form of Resveratrol, i.e. Trans-Resveratrol.
However, we did not stop here. Instead, in order to maximize the absorption of Trans-Resveratrol, we have designed a formula to also address two major bio-availability related mechanisms.
One well known “tool” known to maximize bio-availability of natural compounds such as Trans-Resveratrol is Piperine (5). As a result, we have included 2 mg BioPerine© providing >95% Piperine in each capsule.
The other major approach known to maximize bio-availability of natural compounds are phospholipid-based formulations. These are available commercially known as liposomal formulations and they come as liquid emulsions or solid formulations promoting the formation of liposomal structures (bubble-like structures surrounded by a fat-based layer) that can encapsulate the active ingredients such as Trans-Resveratrol compounds. This phospholipid layer is similar to the cell walls in our body. As a result, liposomes are well received by the body and absorbed in higher quantities by the body, to reach the blood stream.
While liposomal formulations are a great way to deliver increased amount of supplements and drugs to the blood stream, when turning these into products, it leads to various disadvantages for the users. Liposomal products are liquid, heavy and difficult to carry. They have difficult taste. Making their taste better may come with various undesired additives. And typically they have short shelf life, even shorter after the bottle is open. Furthermore, liquid liposomal products need to stay stored at low temperature.
In contrast to the liquid liposomal supplements, liposomal promoting formulations as dry powder in capsules have no taste, they are easy to carry, and they can be stored at room temperature with a long shelf life. The quality is therefore even better since the product is more stable.
Furthermore, phospholipids can be negatively or positively charged leading to a lower absorption and time to circulate in the blood stream, compared to neutrally charged liposomes. In order to address this and further maximize the absorption, out Pro Liposomal formula includes LongLifeLiposomal™.
LongLifeLiposomal™ is a liposomal technology that includes a proprietary blend of Phospholipids and Chitosan to promote the formation of neutrally charged liposomes. Indeed, it is known that Chitosan naturally binds to charged phospholipids to form neutrally charged liposomes. This is how, LongLifeLiposomal™ pro liposomal blend, supports the formation of liposomes that can have a better biocompatibility (improved absorption and a longer circulating time in the blood stream) compared to formulas based on phospholipids alone.
